Lessons from a golden run

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE RECENT victory of the Jamaican women 4x400 meter relay team in Edmonton was not just great from the standpoint of athletics, but was also a major lesson in unity. If one looks at the team one cannot but draw an analogy to the Jamaican society.

Here we had a veteran, followed by a 400-metre specialist, then a 400-metre hurdler and finally a young upcoming 400-metre runner on the anchor leg.

Not only did this hodge-podge of a relay team win gold, but they did so in a new national record. To win, the ladies on the relay team had to come together and have one common goal: victory!

If we now relate this team to the Jamaican society at large these different athletes could be used to represent the different political, religious, social, racial and economic groupings in the Jamaican society.

So too if our political leaders, the Church, the private sector, the various social and racial groups decided to truly come together. Come together around a set of core goals and principles for the betterment of the country.

Head above water

We now relate this team to the Jamaican society at large these different athletes could be used to represent the different political, religious, social, racial and economic groupings in the Jamaican society.

If this unity was achieved the country would be able to finally enjoy the many blessings in store for it.

Unless the country embraces this unity it will forever be underacheiving and struggling to keep its head above water, regardless of who sits in Jamaica House.
