Teen wins model search

Karlene Arthurs

THE SEARCH is now over and someone has been chosen to represent Jamaica in Nice, France in the Elite Model competition. She is 16-year-old Karlene Arthurs of Kingston.

Karlene finished ahead of 20 other girls who had been chosen during the all-island search put on by Television Jamaica, Elite Model Management and The Look Jamaica. The Look Jamaica is a partnership whose shareholders include Kingsley Cooper and young entrepreneur Cathy Goodall.

The girls were chosen during The Elite Model Look, which is one of the most far reaching model searches in the world.

The Elite Model search has unearthed talent such as Cindy Crawford, Gisele Bundchen and Naomi Campbell. Jamaica has also had its own representatives at the Elite in the past in the form of Yonnicka Williams and Romae Gordon. Romae was on hand at the Hilton to present the 21 girls to the audience.

The 21 girls were chosen from across the island in the hope of finding one that would represent Jamaica in this year's competition. The 21 girls whose ages ranged from 14 to 21 years were presented in swimwear to the audience on hand at the Hilton Kingston on Thursday.

From the 21 girls six were chosen.

The six girls were again presented to the audience before the final three girls were chosen. Jean Pierre Begon, Elite Partner who was in Jamaica just for the search presented the three girls Natalie Green, Taneda Lawrence and Karlene Lawrence to the audience. From the three, Karlene was chosen to represent Jamaica. An elated Karlene spoke to THE GLEANER after her selection. "I expected to do well because Mr. (Kinglsey) Cooper said I had the potential and the unique look to do well," she said.
