FALMOUTH, Trelawny
THE Jamaica national football Team in the absence of the foreign-based players eked out a hard fought 1-0 win over an unlucky Trelawny aggregation at the Elletson Wakeland Sports Complex in Falmouth yesterday.
The lone goal came from Fabian Taylor in the ninth minute from a through pass on the wet field. His challenger slipped on the wet surface leaving him free to face a hapless goalkeeper and he made no mistake.
Both teams failed to penetrate the opposing defence and the first half ended without any further clear-cut chnaces on goal. In all just about five shots went goalwards - all way off target.
The game resumed and poor conditions brought on by a second shower during the half time break prevented a display of good football. Towards the middle of the second half however, Trelawny should have even equalised as twice flank crosses went by the nationals' goal without a Trelawny forward making contact.
Thomas Grant, two-times National Premier League leading scorer, knocked loudly on the door of the national squad. He was the bright spark that ignited the crowd as he had the nationals mesmerized dismissing them on numerous occasions.
Some spectators voiced their concern with the striking power of the national squad, albeit the second string team, stating that they were expecting to see more.
Meanwhile striker Walter Boyd has again found favour with the selectors. The 29-year-old striker who last represented the national team eight months ago was named in a 20-man squad for a one match tour of Cuba.
Boyd was recalled to the team lats month ahead of a practice match against Cuba at the National Stadium ahead of a World Cup qualifier against the United States. He did not show up and was not called after.
Also named in the squad are captain Linval Dixon, Aaron Lawrence, Leon Gordon, Marco McDonald, Claude Davis, Damion Stewart, Robert Scarlett, Patrick Graham, Ricardo Fuller and Fabian Taylor. There was also room for eight Under-20 representatives in Shavar Thomas, Allien Whittaker, Sheldon Battiste, Sean Fraser, Kevon Harris, Omar Daley, Damion Williams and Fabian Dawkins.
Forward Kirrk Wright who will be making his fisrt tour with the team was also included. Thew team leaves Thursday for their game in Havana Frday and return Saturday.
