Campbell, tailenders frustrate WI

Black

KWEKWE, Zimbabwe, CANA-Reuters:

TEST batsman Alistair Campbell hit a superb 140 as Zimbabwe A made 345 in their first innings yesterday in the three-day tour match against West Indies.

Tailenders Raymond Price, 22, and Bryan Strang, unbeaten on 50, added 74 for the last wicket as the hosts finished just 29 runs short of the West Indies' first-innings total of 374.

The tourists were 29 for no wicket in their second innings at the close of play, a lead of 58.

The West Indies failed to capitalise on a good spell from fast bowler Colin Stuart, who finished with figures of five for 58.

Stuart took four wickets in seven balls without conceding a run, and appeared to have put his side firmly in control of the match.

His four-wicket blitz came either side of the tea interval at a stage when the Zimbabweans were playing well.

First to go was Guy Croxford, bowled for a patient 16, while Barney Rogers followed next delivery, leg before after offering no shot.

Stuart Matsikenyeri fell for a duck in Stuart's next over and immediately after the tea break captain Mluleki Nkala suffered a similar fate as Zimbabwe A stumbled from 235 for two to 235 for six.

But Campbell, already past his 100, was in magnificent form ahead of Thursday's first Test in Bulawayo.

He was quick to punish anything short from the West Indies' pace attack and was especially effective off the front foot.

He eventually fell to Marlon Black, gloving a hook to wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs off the second delivery with the new ball.

Campbell's 140 came off 250 balls and included 26 fours.

Black struck again in his next over to remove Campbell's brother Donald, superbly caught down the leg side by Jacobs for 12.

Six balls later Travis Friend also edged a Black delivery to Jacobs for 17.

Tailenders Price and Strang then came to the wicket for their entertaining stand, with Strang surviving repeated blows to his bowling hand before reaching 50.

The partnership ended when Price pulled Hooper to Marlon Samuels. Strang's 50 included nine fours and came off 34 balls.

Earlier, after resuming on 26 for no wicket, Campbell and 17-year-old schoolboy Hamilton Masakadza put on 75 for the first wicket.

The impressive Masakadaza was eventually trapped lbw for 33 by Stuart.

Campbell then added a further 70 with Gavin Rennie, who was caught behind off captain Carl Hooper's off-spin for 32.
