Take it easy, gentlemen

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The JLP has launched their political campaign in anticipation of early general elections. What concerns me about this is that the bloodletting has already started as can be judged from the flare-up of violence in the western end of Kingston.

The nature of this violence is clearly political. It is reminiscent of similar violence in the past, especially in the 1980s when over 800 people were killed. If my assumptions are correct that the present violence is politically inspired (and it would be hard to disprove this) then things do not augur well for the country to have a prolonged political campaign.

We would urge caution on both sides. This time around will not be like the 1980s. There are more sophisticated and high-powered weapons at the disposal of the merchants of death who will kill with impunity on behalf of both parties. There will be more death and more destruction of property. Gentlemen, take it easy.

I am, etc.,

RALSTON NEMBHARD
