- Junior Dowie Portland celebrate the dismissal of Robert Samuels yesterday at Melbourne Oval.
KINGSTON APPEAR set to win this year's Rothmans Surrey Senior Cup cricket competition thanks to island-wide rain which affected every fixture yesterday.
The only action of the day was at Melbourne Oval and it was severely curtail by the weather.
Kingston, whose fixture against St. Thomas was washed out yesterday, lead the standing with 35 points and can only be passed by Melbourne or Lucas.
For second-placed Melbourne to surpass Kingston they have to beat Portland outright or on first innings points which would see Kingston and Melbourne tied.
Lucas have to beat Boys' Town in one day to win and that looks unlikely. The two top Surrey teams will play in the all-island Rothmans championship which starts next weekend.
AT MELBOURNE OVAL: Portland led by four wickets for 39 runs from Robert Hamilton held the upper hand over Melborune in their rain-affected match yesterday.
Score: Melbourne 65 for six.
After being sent in to take first strike by the visitors, Melbourne were in grave trouble at 65 for six when rain stopped play for the second and final time. The umpires decided to call off play at 3:30 p.m.
First to go was Aubrey Wollaston, caught by captain Cecil Lewis off the bowling of Hamilton for six. His opening partner, Dillon Ebanks, followed 10 runs later, for two to leave Melbourne at 17 for two.
Llewellyn Meggs and national player Carlton Baugh Jr. added 14 runs for the third wicket. Baugh then departed, caught behind by wicketkeeper Floyd Johnson off Hamilton for nine.
Meggs did not last long after as he went in the same fashion to the same bowler for 18. His innings include three fours off 28 deliveries in 42 minutes. Captain Robert Samuels and Colin Fletcher came and tried to repair the damage but that wasn't to be the case as Samuels provided the keeper with an easy catch to give Harlon Haye his first wicket of the match, at 43 for five.
Tivoli High's Fitzroy Peterkin, playing his first Senior Cup match, joined former Jamaica player Fletcher and the two took the score past the 50 mark before the rain stopped play at 11:58 a.m. At that time the players took an early lunch. When play resumed at 2:00 p.m. only two overs were allowed as the rain came down again. Within the two overs, Haye removed the off-stump of Peterkin for seven. Fletcher was unbeaten on 16.
Hamilton, who took 4-39 off 10 overs, and Haye with 2-24 off his 11 overs, were the only bowlers used by Portland.
