Double standards

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ R.D. Reid's letter in Tuesday's paper regarding politicians attending a don's funeral and agree with the comments he expressed. I also read Delroy Chuck's commentary in Wednesday's issue, and again, I can understand why we are in the mess we are currently in.

We cannot set standards if we appear to condone wrongdoing. Patrick Gallimore seems to think it is not wrong to go...but within the context of the crime and corruption taking place within the society, appearance is everything.

Mr. Chuck also seems to be missing the point. The question is not that gangs exist and flourish in certain places, but the fact that they seem to be protected by our politicians, this creates the problem.

Gleaner columnist, Lloyd Williams, wrote an interesting article in the paper about the effect of gangs and their political connections...it would do Mr. Chuck good to re-read it. (But I guess, being a member of a political party, he does not want to accept that use of these people helps the party to win power).

I am, etc.,

PETER WALKER
